Apple seeks quick bans on eight Samsung phones

REUTERS - Apple Inc is seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones, moving swiftly to translate its resounding court victory over its rival into a tangible business benefit.

The world's most valuable company wasted no time in identifying its targets on Monday: eight older-model smartphones, including the Galaxy S2 and Droid Charge. While Apple's lawsuit encompassed 28 devices, many of those accused products are no longer widely available in the world's largest mobile market.

Although Samsung's flagship Galaxy S III phone was not included in the trial, the jury validated Apple's patents on features and design elements that the U.S. company could then try to wield against that device. Apple may not have to seek a new trial over the S III, but can include it in a "contempt proceeding" that moves much faster, according to legal experts.

Govt increases SMS cap to 20 with immediate effect

NEW DELHI: After limiting the use of SMSes to curb rumours that led to a mass exodus of people from the northeastern part of the country, the government today increased the number of SMSs to 20 per day with immediate effect.

The Ministry of Communication issued a notification which said that it has decided to revise the limit of bulk SMS/MMS to 20 instead of five.

On August 17, the government levied a ban on sending bulk SMSes and MMSes for 15 days after reports of threatening messages being sent through SMS, MMS, e-mails and postings on social media sites, to people from the northeast that they would be attacked to avenge the ethnic violence in Assam.

Earlier, the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) urged that the ban on bulk SMSes should be immediately lifted as it is affecting the business of many firms, mainly small and medium enterprises.

At present there are more than 1,00,000 enterprises, mainly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), that are dependent on this medium for customer outreach which are sent out by over 3,000 registered telemarketers based on rules set by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Sources said that the August 17 nationwide ban on bulk SMS and MMS could be the last one mobile subscribers and phone companies will have to suffer.

The home ministry has started talks with the department of telecom on the feasibility of introducing curbs on bulk SMS at a regional level rather than national, in the future.

Mobile companies have estimated that the 15-day ban will cost them 7-8% of their monthly revenue that, according to one account, comes to roughly Rs. 300 crore.

Ek Tha Tiger sets record first day collections

Salman Khan starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ is estimated to have crossed all first day collection records as the actor delivered his fourth consecutive blockbuster. The movie’s collections are estimated to have surpassed the Rs 30-crore mark in net box office collections, according to initial estimates.

Salman Khan's most anticipated movie Ek Tha Tiger, which has hit the screens across the globe today, has received an earth-shattering opening at the Box Office in India. Salmania is at its peak at the collection centres. Trade experts say that this Kabir Khan directed film is sure to set a new record at the Box Office with its first day collections.

Trade analyst Komal Nahata said, “It is estimated to have made a record for a historic opening. It could also become the fastest movie to earn Rs 100 crore at the box office in the next 4-5 days.”
Some estimates by analysts suggest that the movie might fetch around Rs 31-32 crore for the first day collections. Analysts are already looking at how big the movie’s first week will become in terms of box office collections.

The film has also surpassed the previous records for first day collections as well as single day collections set by movies such as Ra One (Rs 23.5 crore on the second day), Agneepath and Bodyguard by a huge margin.

The theatres across the country screening Ek Tha Tiger were overflowing with movie buffs within and outside in the morning shows. In many places, the theatre owners had to call the police to control the mob. Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#EkThaTiger hysteria at its peak! Rajasthan distributor tells me police from 3 cop stations had to be called at a multiplex in Jaipur."

Salman Khan's previous release Bodyguard has set a new record at the Box Office by grossing Rs 22 crores nett on the first day of its release in India. But this record was erased by Hrithik Roshan's recent release Agneepath, which has set new bench mark at the Box Office. Now, the question is that will Salman's latest movie Ek Tha Tiger break this first day record of Agneepath?
Karan Johar produced movie Agneepath starring Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra in the leads, was one of the most-hyped movies and was released on January 26, Republic Day of India. The movie had registered 90% to 100% occupancy in both single screens and multiplexes across the country. The movie had raked in Rs 23 crore net on the first day. It is the biggest opener in Bollywood so far.
